Kandy is said to be the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Kandy is the second-largest city in Sri Lanka. 115 km from Colombo. This city is far away. This is where the most colorful festival of Sri Lanka ‘Esala Perahera’ is held. To the south of Kandy is the highest point in the country, Nuwara Eliya. It can be called the center point of the famous tea industry of the country. A huge lake in the middle of Kandy town. Scattered around the lake are the Buddha’s Tooth Temple, the Sinhala Cultural Center (where traditional dances are regularly seen), and the Udawattakele Sanctuary. The Udawattakele sanctuary is rich in wildlife. A group of monkeys roamed a place near the entrance. However, they are very innocent monkeys.
From the city of Kandy, you can go to the Tooth Relic Temple. One of the holiest shrines in Sri Lanka. Princess Hemamali and her husband Yuvraj Danta installed the teeth of Gautam Buddha in this temple. How many battles after that! The red eyes of foreign powers have seen this soil, its marks are all over the temple. There is also the Bodhi tree of Tathagata. Excluding history, this temple is a witness to heavy, beautiful, skillful sculpture. Just nine minutes away is the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. There are more than three hundred orchids and innumerable trees in this garden covering an area of about 146 acres. If you are interested in plants, you have to spend a whole day to visit this place. A road runs along the side of the lake into the city. Along that road, there is a mosque a short distance away from the Dante Temple. Opposite that mosque is a “rice hotel” brand restaurant called Salgado. Candy’s best string hopper is available here. With lunu-mirich, coconut chutney, etc.
Further north from Kandy is the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and the famous cave temple town of Dambula.
